This performance is an homage to Chris Burden. As a young sculptor in Boston I first encountered his work and quickly identified with his sense of humor and his appreciation for executing complex projects that require serious engineering. When I moved to Los Angeles 16 years ago, his work took on new meaning — I could now understand his perspective on, and processing of, the California Condition firsthand.
His 1974 work Trans-Fixed describes for me the consequences of our decision as a culture to marry the automobile as a primary mode of transit — a choice that ripples throughout our infrastructure and communities. I carry and celebrate the burden of his legacy as I try to make my way as an artist in Los Angeles.
Rest in peace #Chrisburden and Congratulations #LACMA on the new wing.
